In Erika Navarrete’s Ignorance is Bliss, two women enjoy food and wine outdoors, oblivious to the smoke that billows from smokestacks and the planes flying overhead. The scene feels familiar in its depiction of a picnic, an everyday leisure activity that has been a popular subject in the visual arts. Navarrete explains, "The figures seem carefree, unconcerned about what is going on around them, or, have they just given up?" The women’s seeming indifference prompts us to ask ourselves how comfortable we have become with ignoring our impact on the environment. The artist explains that the sinister two-headed snake represents "both effects of pollution on the ecosystem and a metaphor for the division in our country." Similarly, Hope Jahren asks us to move beyond polarized political discourse and to consider how our personal actions play a role in climate change. She writes, "All species will go extinct eventually, even our own: it is one of nature’s few imperatives. As of today, however, that train has not quite left the station. We still have some control over our demise—namely how long it will take and how much our children and grandchildren will suffer. If we want to take action, we should get started while it still matters what we do."
